“Do not allow yourself to sleep in on weekends more than 30 minutes beyond your usual wake up time during the week.” John L. Eickholt, MD
Please don’t hate us for this one. We promise there is a TON to enjoy on weekend mornings! If you get up early enough, it can be extremely peaceful before others awake.
So, why is this sleep tip so important? An irregular sleep schedule can cause the same effect as jet lag. For more information, check out Sleep Tip # 6.
If you must obtain extra sleep on weekends, take a late morning or early afternoon nap. Remember however, if you nap during the day, you may have trouble falling asleep at your usual bedtime. A short nap, 10-15 minutes in length, is better than a longer nap. Some experts say naps up to 20 minutes in length are okay, and while that may be the case for some, longer naps are especially risky for those who struggle to sleep well at night. If you are unsure how naps affect you, keep a sleep log and look out for patterns.
Waking up at the same time on weekends may be challenging at first, but once you adjust, it becomes much easier. You may even find you enjoy sipping herbal tea and reading a book early in the morning. Who knows, maybe you could discover a passion for bike rides at sunrise? Maybe that’s just me…
